Tired But Wired? An Evening Routine That Actually Works

You've been on since 6am. You couldn't keep your eyes open on the couch at 8. Then you get into bed and your brain lights up like a switchboard. Tired but wired is one of the most common things our community tells us about, and it's almost always a cortisol timing problem, not a willpower one.

Why you're wired at bedtime

Cortisol should be lowest at night. When your day is one long sprint, it stays elevated, and your body reads "still on duty" right when it should be reading "done". Screens, a late coffee, a stressful message at 9pm, and sugar after dinner all keep it up. The fix is a routine that sends the opposite signal, every night, the same way.

The 60 minute wind-down

T minus 60: last screen. Phone on charge in another room. This is the single hardest and single most effective step.

T minus 50: brew. A warm, caffeine-free cup. The ritual matters as much as the herbs. Same mug, same spot. Our guide to the best herbal teas for cortisol and sleep covers what to look for; the short version is jujube for calm, roselle for a caffeine-free base, and stevia rather than sugar so you're not spiking before bed.

T minus 40: brain dump. Two minutes, pen and paper. Everything you're holding for tomorrow goes on the page so your head can put it down.

T minus 30: dim everything. Lamps, not overheads. Warm light tells your body it's evening.

T minus 20: slow down the body. A shower, stretching on the floor, or just lying with legs up the wall. Nothing that raises your heart rate.

T minus 10: bed, no scrolling. Read something paper. If you're not asleep in 20 minutes, get up, sit in dim light, and try again. Lying there wired trains your brain that bed is where you worry.

What to skip in the evening

  • Caffeine after 2pm. Yes, that includes green tea and most "energy" teas.
  • Sugar after dinner. A sweet hit is a mini stress response.
  • Big workouts after 7pm. Move earlier in the day.
  • Doom scrolling. Obvious, still the number one culprit.

Where Not Another Detox Tea fits

Our Detox tea was made for exactly this feeling. Jujube is one of the most traditional calming botanicals in Traditional Chinese Medicine, roselle gives it a soothing caffeine-free base, and it's sweetened with stevia, not sugar. Drink it in the early evening as part of the routine above. Because it also contains senna, a natural cleanse botanical, it's an early-evening cup rather than a last-thing-before-sleep one. See the Detox tea.

Most women in our community pair it with the morning Slim tea so the whole day has a rhythm. Essentials Bundle here.

FAQ

Why am I tired but can't sleep? Usually because cortisol, your stress hormone, is still elevated at night. Screens, late caffeine, sugar and unresolved stress keep it up. A consistent wind-down routine helps your body get the signal that the day is over.

What's the best evening routine for stress? Screens off an hour before bed, a warm caffeine-free drink, a two minute brain dump, dim lighting, gentle movement, then bed without your phone.

What should I drink before bed to relax? A caffeine-free herbal tea with calming botanicals like jujube, naturally sweetened rather than sugary. Avoid anything with caffeine after early afternoon.

How long does it take for an evening routine to work? It's a habit, so consistency matters more than any single night. Most people notice they fall asleep more easily once the routine is genuinely nightly.

Can I drink Detox tea right before bed? Better in the early evening. It contains senna, a natural cleanse botanical, so follow the pack directions and leave a gap before sleep.
