Bloated After Eating? Teas and Habits That Actually Help
You finish a meal and twenty minutes later you feel like you've swallowed a balloon. Post-meal bloating is one of the most common complaints we hear, and most of the time it comes down to a handful of things you can change.
The usual causes
- Eating fast. You swallow air, and you don't chew enough, so your gut gets bigger jobs than it should.
- Big meals late. Digestion slows in the evening and when you sit still.
- Fizzy drinks and gum. Air in, air stays.
- Common trigger foods. Onion, garlic, beans, lentils, wheat, dairy, some fruit and anything with sugar alcohols. Not bad foods, just gassy ones.
- Stress. Eating in fight-or-flight mode slows digestion. More in our stress belly guide.
Teas that help after a meal
Ginger. The classic post-meal cup. Traditionally used to help the stomach empty and ease that over-full feeling.
Roselle (hibiscus). Caffeine-free, gentle, good if the feeling is more puffy than gassy. Our roselle guide covers it in detail.
Black pepper. A little goes a long way as a digestive warmer, and it helps other botanicals along.
Peppermint. Good for daytime gas, just be careful before bed if you get reflux.
Drink it warm, about 20 to 30 minutes after eating, sipped slowly.
Habits that fix more than tea will
- Chew properly. Put the fork down between mouthfuls. This one change does more than any supplement.
- Smaller dinner, bigger lunch. Your gut is more active earlier in the day.
- Walk for ten minutes after eating. Best free digestive aid there is.
- Water between meals, not litres with them.
- Notice your triggers. Keep a note for a week. Patterns show up fast.
When to see a doctor
If bloating is constant rather than after meals, painful, comes with weight change, blood, or a change in bowel habits, get it checked. Everyday post-meal bloating is common; persistent bloating deserves a proper look.
Where Not Another Detox Tea fits
Our two teas cover both ends of the day. Slim in the morning is built on ginger, moringa, pandan, roselle and black pepper for digestion and steady energy. Detox in the evening pairs roselle, jujube and warming botanicals with senna, a natural cleanse botanical, for regularity and a lighter morning. Both naturally sweetened with stevia.
