Tea for Bloating at Night: What to Drink Before Bed
Evening bloating is its own thing. You were fine at lunch, then dinner lands, you sit down, and by 8pm your waistband is a problem. What you drink before bed can help, as long as it's the right thing at the right time.
Why bloating peaks at night
Dinner is usually the biggest meal, eaten fastest, latest, and followed by sitting still. Digestion slows when you're inactive and slows again when you're stressed, so everything you ate has more time to ferment. Add a day of not drinking enough water and the evening is when it all catches up.
The best teas for night-time bloating
Ginger. The warming classic. Traditionally used to keep digestion moving and ease that over-full feeling after meals.
Roselle (hibiscus). Caffeine-free and tart, with a long history in Traditional Thai Medicine for fluid balance. Good if your bloating is more puffy than gassy.
Black pepper. A small amount is a traditional digestive warmer in TCM, and it helps other botanicals along.
Jujube. Not a digestive herb as such, but if your evening bloating comes with stress, jujube's calming effect helps the whole system settle. More in our cortisol and bloating guide.
A cleanse blend, earlier in the evening. If you're also backed up, a blend with senna can help keep things regular. Drink it earlier rather than at bedtime, follow the directions, and use it as a short ritual with breaks, not an everyday forever tea.
When to drink it
About 30 to 60 minutes after dinner, and at least an hour before bed. Sip it warm and slowly. If you can, take a short walk first; movement plus a warm cup is the best combination there is for evening bloating.
What to avoid at night
- Peppermint if you get reflux lying down. Great for daytime bloating, less so before bed.
- Anything with caffeine.
- Sugary teas. A sweet cup spikes you and feeds the bloat.
- Ice cold drinks straight after a big meal.

Where Not Another Detox Tea fits
Our Detox tea was designed as the evening cup: roselle, ginger-adjacent warming botanicals like black pepper, jujube, safflower and East Indian screw tree, with senna for gentle cleansing and stevia for sweetness without sugar. Drink it in the early evening after dinner. It's the reason so many women in our community say they wake up feeling lighter. See the Detox tea.
